Optical Communication Expert at Verizon Corporation

Abstract:

Internet has developed for more than 30 years with huge growth rates and deeply changed our way of life. The physical foundation of Internet is the optical transport network (OTN). Based on his many-year R&D and innovation experience at Verizon, a telecom giant, the speaker will give an overview of global OTNs. The presentation will focus on key enabling technologies introduced to OTN in past ten years and on an outlook of hot R&D topics for OTN in near future.

Biography:

Dr. TJ Xia is a recognized expert of optical communications at Verizon and an adjunct professor at Miami University in Ohio. He earned his PhD degree in physics from CREOL, University of Central Florida. He has published more than 150 research papers, four technical book chapters, and holds more than eighty US patents. He is an OSA Fellow. In 2011 he was featured as a “Verizon Innovator” on YouTube. He received the Professional Achievement Award of UCF in 2013. In 2016 Verizon published a paper, Seeing What Can’t Be Seen, dedicated to his innovation activities at the telecom giant.

Dr. Xia has been studying and refining methods on how to solve tough problems and produce exceptional solutions for decades. He uses his findings from his study to help local communities and professional groups. He was the Chief Innovation Officer of IEEE Dallas Section in 2015 and 2016. At the end of 2017 he published his book, How to Inspire Outstanding Ideas, which includes a comprehensive set of most effective creative-thinking approaches condensed from several thousand case studies. He hopes people will use the approaches to help innovation, problem-solving, business success, and personal growth.
